Aunt Hannah, Martha, And John
Mrs. Alden has written nearly 100 books and a hundred plus short stories. I (Susan) have read nearly eighty of her books and scores of her stories, and out of them all, this is my favorite story. Perhaps it is my age, and I readily identify with Aunt Hannah, but I promise you this story has something for nearly everyone. Many events in this story are true and taken from Mrs. Alden's own life. It is rich in characterizations, and you will be laughing and smiling your way through much of it. It is the story of a young preacher and his wife, John and Martha, beginning their newly married life at the same time they are undertaking their first ministry in a church. Although they love the Lord, and are eager to serve Him, and have the highest expectations, they have much to learn about the realities of pastoring a people and at the same time adjusting to marriage. Aunt Hannah reared John from his childhood so she is the mother who gives a helping hand and sage advice as needed, all the while continuing to grow in her own Christian walk. I loved this story and smile every time I think of it! I hope you will be as blessed by it as I was! KOF Old Reprint.

Browns at Mt. Hermon
Mrs. Alden seldom wrote light-hearted stories, but this one is light-hearted and uplifting. You won't be able to put it down once you begin reading it! And yet with all the light-heartedness, the plan of salvation is made incredibly plain for those young people who find it so "hard" to surrender their lives to the Lord Jesus. Great book for teens as well as adults. KOF Old Reprint.

Echoing and Re-Echoing
Faye Huntington co-authored several books with Isabella Alden. Echoing and Re-Echoing seems to be entirely written by Faye, and what an excellent story she wrote! This story picks up on Alfred Reid, Abbe's brother. You first met Abbe and Alfred in Ester Ried. This is the earnest story of a pastor who deeply longs for a real heart change in his people. Each chapter opens with a Scripture, which the reader sees impressed upon hearts as the chapter unfolds. It is a story about sowing, growing, maturing, and finally harvesting real fruit for God. This excellent story will be a blessing to all who read it! KOF Old Reprint.

Elena
Elena, a Christian young girl, grew up in communist Romania and was forced to attend communist schools with their subsequent brainwashing. However, her grandparents' and parents' strong Christian faith and example enabled her to withstand these strong negative influences in her life. God can work no matter the circumstance! This is a great read, but is recommended for older teens and adults due to some graphic content concerning persecution.

Ester Ried
Ester Ried was originally published in 1870. It was one of Mrs. Alden's earliest books and became her most popular work. It is the story of a young woman (18) who claims to be a Christian, but shows a lack of love, patience, and concern for her younger siblings. The work load at home is heavy. She often complains, and is irritable most of the time. The story is about her spiritual awakening to the Lord, and what it means to be a servant with a sweet and willing spirit. After "awakening" she realizes what a different effect she might have had on her younger brothers and sisters had she acted like a real Christian. God expects certain behavior from those who claim His name. This is an excellent story and would be a great book for older sisters to read! KOF Old Reprint.

Ester Ried "Yet Speaking"
Nearly every time I read or reread one of Mrs. Alden's stories, I think it must be the best one! This one surely is near the top of the list! This story begins with Flossie Roberts of Four Girls at Chautauqa, having been just married and moving to New York to begin her new life. This story excels in showing the reader how to really live and work for the Master, our Lord Jesus Christ! It shows the reader countless ways to reach some of the most seemingly unreachable people for Jesus. Also, Flossie is an excellent example of a soft, feminine woman with a gentle, but powerful, Christian walk. Best of all, this is a true story. Mrs. Alden assures the reader that there really was a Flossie Shipley (albeit her name could have been changed), and she really did accomplish these things in her early days of marriage. If that be true, then I would assuredly think much of the Chautauqua and Ester Ried series would be based on true stories. You will not want to miss this one! KOF Old Reprint.

Four Girls at Chautauqua
This is the first story in a series about four girls who attend one of the first Chautauqau Bible meetings. (It was actually like a Bible camp which lasted for a week or so.) Three of these young girls professed to be Christians and were regular attendees at church, but, although they professed Christ, there was little or no proof in their daily lives. The fourth girl never even professed to be a Christian. These girls went for a lark to Chautuaqua, and when they came under the earnest preaching of the Word of God, and were in daily contact with sincere believers, they became aware of their cold, lifeless hearts. Four Girls at Chautauqua reveals how God works in the souls of different people, drawing each to Himself. As with all Mrs. Alden's books, the difference between those who simply attend church and those who love Jesus Christ is plainly illustrated. This book will help the reader to discern in just which group he or she might be. KOF Old Reprint.

Four Mothers at Chautauqua
This is the concluding sequel to the Chautauqua Series. The four mothers, now grandmothers, had always wanted to return to Chautauqua, but circumstances and life had prevented them until now. They return to their beloved Chautauqua with children and grandchildren in tow. These four ladies have remained faithful to their Lord throughout their lives; all of their children have come to love the Lord except for two. In part, this is the story of the two remaining children to be brought into God's fold. In one way this book was disappointing because Chautauqua, twenty-five years later, had changed. Although the Bible was still preached and Christ was upheld in sermons, the flavor of many of the classes had changed from simple Bible lessons to classes on upholding the intellectual and literary tastes of the people. There was even a musical presentation of Sleeping Beauty. Isn't this just how life is? Gradually the philosophies of the world creep in one door, and God leaves through the other. Mrs. Alden, in her earlier books, always pointed out the dangers of entertainments, especially in the area of performances. Sadly, in this book performances had come to Chautauqua. One note of interest to the fans of Mrs. Alden is that in her autobiography, toward the end of her life, she wrote that she no longer attended Chautuaqua because of its worldliness, but had moved to join with those who were going back to, or staying with, the Bible. Fans of the Four Girls at Chautauqua will enjoy reading about the closing years of their lives. KOF Old Reprint.

Highway of Sorrow
This is the incredible true story of the Russian Stundists who stood for their Bible-believing faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in direct opposition to the Russian Orthodox Church. For adhering to their faith, they suffered great persecution, and most often were sent to Siberia. Reading the story of their lives leaves an indelible imprint on one's own. It will perhaps present a beautiful pattern for us as we live in the ever-increasing secularization and amoralization of our own society. This is a must read. Due to the nature of the sufferings and persecutions, this is not suitable for young children. KOF Old Reprint.

Household Puzzles
This is the first in a series of two stories dealing with the puzzles of family life, and in particular the Christian life of the Randolph family. The Randolph family is composed of a sweet, quiet, rather sickly wife, a godly, quiet-mannered earnest father, four very diverse sisters, two of whom are professing believers and two which attend church but profess nothing, and an unbelieving eldest brother. The demands of a financially struggling household place a heavy burden on the members, causing a number of puzzling dilemmas. They react in a variety of different ways.
Mrs. Alden does not give pat answers to life's puzzles but rather, as in life, lets the characters work out things for themselves. This sometimes frustrating story is a very real clip of human lives with and without the true peace of God. As you read this story and the sequel, The Randolphs, you will see the hand of God leading and directing and drawing each one to Himself through the trials and circumstances of life. You will see the transformation in attitudes that only He can bring about in His children. You will see the unbelievers and professing believers come to a real and vibrant living faith in Him. This series is definitely worth reading. Our entire family enjoyed reading these stories and talking about them, and even recognizing some of ourselves in the characters of these pages. In the Hollow of His Hand
This sequel to Highway of Sorrow continues with the story of the Stundist wives who were either left behind or took the long journey to Siberia with their husbands. It is an incredibly sad story, and yet inspiring. Despite the persecutions, sufferings and even death, these people continued to love the Lord, and count it joy to thus live for Him. You will never be the same after reading their story. KOF Old Reprint.

John Remington
This sequel to Aunt Hannah, Martha and John is an incredible read. At first you might begin to think this is just an adventuresome story, but Isabella Alden wrote about true happenings to herself, family, people in her church or people she met. In this sequel John Remington went on to fight the battle of his life with those opposed to the temperance movement. It affected his life and those he loved and ultimately cost him dearly. There is much to be learned about love and forgiveness, being true to the Lord and one's convictions in the face of heated opposition, and living for the only worthwhile reason, and that is living for the Lord. This is a hard one to put down. KOF Old Reprint.

Julia Ried
Here we meet Julia Ried and Dr. Douglas of Ester Ried. Due to their mother's poor health, the family home has broken up, and Julia has become self-supporting against her mother's advice. Her new friend, the mistress of her boarding house, a "professing" Christian, easily overwhelms the impressionable young girl and gradually starts drawing her away from her more conservative upbringing. As Dr. Douglas tries to point out what is taking place, she becomes prideful and resentful, and plunges further in the opposite direction. She wastes valuable opportunities to help others and be a testimony for the Lord. At last, after a tragedy, she comes back to the Lord, recommits her life, and begins to attempt to undo some of the damage she has done. The great value of this book is in showing how foolish young people are when they do not listen to those who are older and wiser, and also makes one aware that not everyone who professes to be a Christian is a friend. King's Daughter
This story deals with a subject we do not often hear about in our generation—temperance. Mrs. Alden skillfully answers every argument that people, especially professing Christians, use to defend their positions on this subject. As there is nothing new under the sun, the same types of arguments are used today to support every other kind of worldliness, and the answers are as pertinent to these issues as well.
On a more personal level, this story will present a model of love and servanthood from a daughter to her father. Perhaps if we would work as diligently in our own fields of harvest, we would reap more fruit. Also, the great scriptural truth that, "His ways are not as our ways," is made plain in the circumstances of their lives and may encourage all who read this book to take hope that God is in control and working even when we may not see it. One Commonplace Day—If one belongs to the Lord, is there ever a "commonplace day"? This exceptional story deals with many people of all ages and walks of life whose lives are intertwined with the thread of God's working among them. If you are wondering how to become a more serious Christian worker, this book will give you more than a few ideas. Prayer plus work will yield results in the harvest field. Parlor and Kitchen
This book is truly a gem! It is the story of a girl who is orphaned at the age of sixteen. She must go out in the great, wide world to earn her living. As it was in the 1800's, her only option was to go out to "service." Service meant that she would hire herself out to be a servant to a household. Since she really did not know how to go about getting a position, or even being a servant, her lone aunt took her kindly under her wings and helped her along. In essence, Parlor and Kitchen is an excellent textbook on being a servant. But you might say, "So, who wants to be a servant? Why should we read this?" I'm glad you asked! Why, the Lord Jesus calls us all to be servants. If we are wives, mothers, children or employees, we will find these instructions very insightful. However, we can go a step further, and apply these instructions to ourselves as servants of the Lord! This would make a wonderful little book for family teaching time, lesson time at Keepers' clubs, or personal devotions. It is very thought-provoking, especially to those who have a heart for it. Ruth Erskine's Son
The saga of Ruth Erskine's life continues. This book catches us up to Ruth's life from where the book, Judge Burnham's Daughters, ends. It is quite interesting to read about Ruth's closeness to her son, and the exemplary example she sets as a mother-in-law. She is "fifty-something" in this story. Life has ebbed and flowed; problems have arisen and settled; death has often come close to her, but through it all, she has continued to grow closer to her Lord, and her Christian walk has become much more Christlike. This is definitely a thought-provoking book! KOF Old Reprint.

This is a companion book to They Would Not Be Silent. It contains true stories of the courageous and faithful believers in communist Romania and the former Soviet Union. They Would Not Be Silent
This is an outstanding collection of stories of ordinary people enduring persecution for their faith under communistic rule in eastern Europe. The stories take place from 1945 until as late as 1989. We found the book especially interesting as the stories were written from the perspective of being behind the Berlin wall in the former Soviet Union. It did reveal somewhat how communistic governments and parties operate, and also how some people viewed western countries and longed for their freedom. It also demonstrated how adversity will strengthen our faith and trust in God. There are stories of young teenagers coming to know God, and willing to go to prison and die for their faith in Jesus. A high point of the book was that it focused on everyday people such as farmers, carpenters and factory workers. We can live for God and take a stand for our faith no matter what our circumstances or occupation. There are some graphic details, so we would recommend it for older teens or adults. Inspirational and spiritually refreshing!

This is a thought-provoking book for every wife to read, especially for those women who are married to unbelievers, or to those professing-to-believe men who really are not believers.
