McGuffey Readers
They may be a bit old-fashioned by today’s standards, but McGuffey Readers are still ahead of most of today’s readers. The content is good—no fairy-tale stories, no fantasy stories, no wild adventure stories, no science-fiction—just plain, sound realism. They often contain some serious thoughts—a bit old-fashioned, but the kind of thoughts that afford some understanding for what real life is all about.
These McGuffey Readers are lovely durable hardbacks (5˝x8˝) that will last a lifetime. These readers are the rare, original version of the four book set of McGuffey Readers. They have not been revised or supplemented with additional stories to cover more grades or be more modern. These are the pre-1836 versions. All post-1836 versions are diluted adaptations used by the public school system at the time.
William McGuffy believed strongly in phonics for beginning reading, and also believed that such reading develops attention to detail. To be able to read well orally has always been a skill integral to a thorough education. Especially for the young person, phonics, reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and elocution are all integrally interrelated skills to be forged in conjunction with each other. McGuffey’s First Reader begins with short stories of a few paragraphs and moves to stories of over three pages. Use would begin on page 4 of Reading Workbook Series 3 Quarter 1. Most words are phonetically regular. A few have silent letters. The words get as hard as "would," "stalked," or "engaged." Stories are about children who love God and desire to learn.
