Most people are agreed that the first thing a child should learn is to read. Then comes the inevitable question: How do I start? You can teach your child to read in three easy steps. First, teach the short vowel and simple consonant sounds. This can be done with flash cards, letters on the refrigerator, or something you make yourself. Next, teach your child to combine a few basic sounds, such as combining the sounds “d—a” into “da.” Once the child is able to begin combining sounds, he or she is ready to begin using a reading practice program like Succeeding at Reading, that will take your child through a systematic process of learning to read. With a good phonics base, it is the only tool that you will need to teach your child to read. Fifteen to twenty minutes per day will make your child a proficient reader. After a short time with Succeeding at Reading, your child will be ready to begin reading some other books while continuing to hone his or her reading skills in the practice lessons. Teaching a child to read is really that simple.
