The Practical Arithmetics Curriculum Series
For Homeschool
We were delighted to discover these old-fashioned arithmetic books still in print. These are the type of books we learned from forty years ago. Arithmetic never changes, and the tried-and-true methods used in these gems has stood the test of time.
These are the books that were used to train the generation of mathematicians that sent astronauts to the moon, and made on-the-spot, emergency recalculations for their return and reentry to the atmosphere with notepads and pencils in the days when there were no interactive computers to depend upon. You will find these books to be entirely wholesome, as well as very challenging, for your children. Your children will be drilled by lists of problems that will require them to perfect each arithmetic skill in every possible facet and type of problem in which it can be faced.
There are scores of problems which thoroughly exercise each step along the way. They are followed by plenty of "word" problems designed to implement the concepts, and make them a practical and integral part of life.
The first book begins with basic addition skills, and the series continues building a complete and comprehensive array of math skills, which, in the third book includes the use of equations, graphing, calculating areas of various geometric shapes (triangles, surfaces of cylinders, etc), calculating volumes of three-dimensional shapes like cones, some basics of geometry, financial calculations like interest, installment buying, payment schedules, commissions, bank balances, household accounts, and much more. These are pretty comprehensive math skills for an eighth grader.
The books are all very durable with hardback covers. Each one contains over 500 pages with the correct answers to all the problems in a generous appendix at the back of the book. Best of all, the set of three books will take your child from third grade mathematics through eighth grade for a total six-year cost of $41.85. That is right! A complete math program for less than $7.00 per year, and, if the child copies the problems, rather than writing directly in the book, these sturdy books can be used by every child in even the largest families. You simply won't find a better homeschool math curriculum!
