Books by Isabella Alden

Isabella Macdonald Alden lived from 1841 to 1930. Her pen name was Pansy. She wrote or edited more than two hundred published works. Isabella Alden was known for developing characters who possessed an unwavering commitment to follow Jesus Christ. Her motivation for writing was to give a clear understanding of salvation and what it means to be a committed Christian. So often in her books, she presents the characteristics of a professing Christian in contrast to a possessing Christian. Each book has a particular biblical point she is trying to share with her readers.

This is another intriguing story springing from Ester Ried Yet Speaking. Life is one long endless chain of God linking those Who are His to those Who need to be His! It is fascinating to read how God weaves our lives together for His purposes. Mrs. Alden's characterizations are excellent. There is not one of us who will not see one's self among her cast. Be challenged! Read it!

Product Image Add To Cart   Aunt Hannah, Martha, And John
Mrs. Alden has written nearly 100 books and a hundred plus short stories. I (Susan) have read nearly eighty of her books and scores of her stories, and out of them all, this is my favorite story. Perhaps it is my age, and I readily identify with Aunt Hannah, but I promise you this story has something for nearly everyone. Many events in this story are true and taken from Mrs. Alden's own life. It is rich in characterizations, and you will be laughing and smiling your way through much of it. It is the story of a young preacher and his wife, John and Martha, beginning their newly married life at the same time they are undertaking their first ministry in a church. Although they love the Lord, and are eager to serve Him, and have the highest expectations, they have much to learn about the realities of pastoring a people and at the same time adjusting to marriage. Aunt Hannah reared John from his childhood so she is the mother who gives a helping hand and sage advice as needed, all the while continuing to grow in her own Christian walk. I loved this story and smile every time I think of it! I hope you will be as blessed by it as I was! KOF Old Reprint.

This is a delightful story about a poor little girl whose only possession was a plump white chicken. The mother wisely uses the chicken to illustrate many lessons to her child, but the most important lesson Bernie learned herself. There was to be a special offering at church for some orphans, and Bernie had nothing to give except her chicken. Could she do it? You will be blessed by her struggle to give her all to the Lord. Mrs. Alden seldom wrote light-hearted stories, but this one is light-hearted and uplifting. You won't be able to put it down once you begin reading it! And yet with all the light-heartedness, the plan of salvation is made incredibly plain for those young people who find it so "hard" to surrender their lives to the Lord Jesus. Great book for teens as well as adults. KOF Old Reprint.

Chrissy is such an interesting character—a confident eighteen-year-old. She's a good member of her church, but is she really a believer in the Lord Jesus? She has high moral standards according to her family and church, but are they the standards of her Saviour? In her efforts to do good, is she really doing good? Is busyness for the Lord equal to serving Him? These and many more questions will be answered by Chrissy's challenges. A very life-changing book!

These stories deal with the struggles, and eventual victory, in the Christian life. They will awaken the reader to many of those insidious little temptations that are so subtle that we often simply do not notice them as disgraces to our Savior, or that we are in such habit of excusing so painlessly that we have since concluded them harmless. This book is excellent reading for anyone who wishes a better understanding of the multitude of little things that make up "living for Christ." KOF Old Reprint.

With the backdrop of the Civil War, this is a fascinating read of a young girl, Docia, who reveals through her journal her one great desire to be rich. She believes that if she were rich, she would be happy. Of course, as she comes to the Lord, and learns of Him and His ways, the folly of her great desire slowly becomes apparent to her. Her journey to womanhood and her journey in following Christ is one that most readers will enjoy taking with her. Excellent!

Faye Huntington co-authored several books with Isabella Alden. Echoing and Re-Echoing seems to be entirely written by Faye, and what an excellent story she wrote! This story picks up on Alfred Reid, Abbe's brother. You first met Abbe and Alfred in Ester Ried. This is the earnest story of a pastor who deeply longs for a real heart change in his people. Each chapter opens with a Scripture, which the reader sees impressed upon hearts as the chapter unfolds. It is a story about sowing, growing, maturing, and finally harvesting real fruit for God. This excellent story will be a blessing to all who read it! KOF Old Reprint.

Ester Ried was originally published in 1870. It was one of Mrs. Alden's earliest books and became her most popular work. It is the story of a young woman (18) who claims to be a Christian, but shows a lack of love, patience, and concern for her younger siblings. The work load at home is heavy. She often complains, and is irritable most of the time. The story is about her spiritual awakening to the Lord, and what it means to be a servant with a sweet and willing spirit. After "awakening" she realizes what a different effect she might have had on her younger brothers and sisters had she acted like a real Christian. God expects certain behavior from those who claim His name. This is an excellent story and would be a great book for older sisters to read! KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Ester Ried "Yet Speaking"
Nearly every time I read or reread one of Mrs. Alden's stories, I think it must be the best one! This one surely is near the top of the list! This story begins with Flossie Roberts of Four Girls at Chautauqa, having been just married and moving to New York to begin her new life. This story excels in showing the reader how to really live and work for the Master, our Lord Jesus Christ! It shows the reader countless ways to reach some of the most seemingly unreachable people for Jesus. Also, Flossie is an excellent example of a soft, feminine woman with a gentle, but powerful, Christian walk. Best of all, this is a true story. Mrs. Alden assures the reader that there really was a Flossie Shipley (albeit her name could have been changed), and she really did accomplish these things in her early days of marriage. If that be true, then I would assuredly think much of the Chautauqua and Ester Ried series would be based on true stories. You will not want to miss this one! KOF Old Reprint.

This wonderful story is about the struggles of a girl named Esther (named after Ester Ried). She came from truly godly missionaries, who were dirt poor but loved the Lord and counted everything in life as all joy in service to their King. But it was not so with Esther; she often found it difficult to be happy and content; she had a quick tongue that was hard to control; she often felt like she was a failure, and could not seem to attain the faith of her parents. It is a story of contrasts—hearts who live and breathe Christ, and those who either struggle to do so, or may simply not be His. Your heart will be challenged as you read this! KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Exact Truth
This story is about a young girl who has trouble with her tongue, which often gets her into trouble. Through keeping a journal and studying Scripture, she begins to learn about the ins and outs of telling the truth. If something is not the exact truth, is it really the truth at all? This story will definitely give the reader reason to consider such things. It also often exposes the subtle motives behind not telling the exact truth. This story will certainly encourage thinking, and perhaps cause us to examine ourselves to see if the words we speak are the exact truth! Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Four Girls at Chautauqua
This is the first story in a series about four girls who attend one of the first Chautauqau Bible meetings. (It was actually like a Bible camp which lasted for a week or so.) Three of these young girls professed to be Christians and were regular attendees at church, but, although they professed Christ, there was little or no proof in their daily lives. The fourth girl never even professed to be a Christian. These girls went for a lark to Chautuaqua, and when they came under the earnest preaching of the Word of God, and were in daily contact with sincere believers, they became aware of their cold, lifeless hearts. Four Girls at Chautauqua reveals how God works in the souls of different people, drawing each to Himself. As with all Mrs. Alden's books, the difference between those who simply attend church and those who love Jesus Christ is plainly illustrated. This book will help the reader to discern in just which group he or she might be. KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Four Mothers at Chautauqua
This is the concluding sequel to the Chautauqua Series. The four mothers, now grandmothers, had always wanted to return to Chautauqua, but circumstances and life had prevented them until now. They return to their beloved Chautauqua with children and grandchildren in tow. These four ladies have remained faithful to their Lord throughout their lives; all of their children have come to love the Lord except for two. In part, this is the story of the two remaining children to be brought into God's fold. In one way this book was disappointing because Chautauqua, twenty-five years later, had changed. Although the Bible was still preached and Christ was upheld in sermons, the flavor of many of the classes had changed from simple Bible lessons to classes on upholding the intellectual and literary tastes of the people. There was even a musical presentation of Sleeping Beauty. Isn't this just how life is? Gradually the philosophies of the world creep in one door, and God leaves through the other. Mrs. Alden, in her earlier books, always pointed out the dangers of entertainments, especially in the area of performances. Sadly, in this book performances had come to Chautauqua. One note of interest to the fans of Mrs. Alden is that in her autobiography, toward the end of her life, she wrote that she no longer attended Chautuaqua because of its worldliness, but had moved to join with those who were going back to, or staying with, the Bible. Fans of the Four Girls at Chautauqua will enjoy reading about the closing years of their lives. KOF Old Reprint.

A Hedge Fence is an outstanding book for children. Frank, the boy in the story, has been wishing he had a hedge to keep him from doing wrong. An older friend begins sending Scripture verses to Frank each month as a "hedge fence" against temptations of sin. Frank, at first, cannot see how the verses could help him, but he quickly learns that Scripture is a very ready help in time of need. Frank also has a wonderful relationship with his father and mother, which would bring joy to the heart of any parent. Although this book is written for children, teens and adults will be blessed by reading about these wonderful hedges. They just might prove helpful to many of us too! Old reprint.

This is the first story Isabella Alden ever wrote. In fact, she was just in her teens and wrote it in response to a contest. First prize went to the best story explaining salvation to children. Hers was the winner! It is the story of an elder brother who, while away from home, came to Christ during his long absence. His family is delighted with the new, loving changes in his manner, and he ever so quietly and persuasively lives his Christian life, sowing spiritual seeds amongst his younger siblings. The story continues with the children's struggles in learning what it really means to not only come to Christ, but live for Him. Every member of the family will be blessed by reading this! Product Image Add To Cart   Her Mother's Bible
This is one of Mrs. Alden's finest works. It is the story of a grandmother's Bible handed down to her daughter, whose young son reads a portion of it each night. He finds verses which have been highlighted by his grandmother, and ponders what they mean. He takes a verse for a day or sometimes a week, and God, ever so faithfully, teaches this young boy what the verse means, and how it should be applied in his daily life. This would make an excellent family read-aloud, but would be perfect for any young boy! Old reprint.

This is the first in a series of two stories dealing with the puzzles of family life, and in particular the Christian life of the Randolph family. The Randolph family is composed of a sweet, quiet, rather sickly wife, a godly, quiet-mannered earnest father, four very diverse sisters, two of whom are professing believers and two which attend church but profess nothing, and an unbelieving eldest brother. The demands of a financially struggling household place a heavy burden on the members, causing a number of puzzling dilemmas. They react in a variety of different ways. Mrs. Alden does not give pat answers to life's puzzles but rather, as in life, lets the characters work out things for themselves. This sometimes frustrating story is a very real clip of human lives with and without the true peace of God. As you read this story and the sequel, The Randolphs, you will see the hand of God leading and directing and drawing each one to Himself through the trials and circumstances of life. You will see the transformation in attitudes that only He can bring about in His children. You will see the unbelievers and professing believers come to a real and vibrant living faith in Him. This series is definitely worth reading. Our entire family enjoyed reading these stories and talking about them, and even recognizing some of ourselves in the characters of these pages. Product Image Add To Cart   Jessie Wells
We are excited to bring Jessie Wells back into print. It was Mrs. Alden’s second book and was written in 1867. We think it is one of her best. It is the story of a teenage girl who has made a profession in Christ, but there seems to be no evidence of it in her life. She decides to get serious about her walk with Christ. Another thread woven into the story is about Jessie’s unbelieving brother. She turns her prayers and heart toward home and winning those closest to her. It makes a difference. This is an excellent story for everyone, but especially for young ladies.

Product Image Add To Cart   John Remington
This sequel to Aunt Hannah, Martha and John is an incredible read. At first you might begin to think this is just an adventuresome story, but Isabella Alden wrote about true happenings to herself, family, people in her church or people she met. In this sequel John Remington went on to fight the battle of his life with those opposed to the temperance movement. It affected his life and those he loved and ultimately cost him dearly. There is much to be learned about love and forgiveness, being true to the Lord and one's convictions in the face of heated opposition, and living for the only worthwhile reason, and that is living for the Lord. This is a hard one to put down. KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Judge Burnham's Daughters
Once again we meet Ruth Erskine (Four Girls at Chautauqua) now Ruth Burnham. She has become "unequally yoked," and this volume details many trials and heartaches that arise from this situation. Also, though she has managed to hold to her faith, she has done it with such hardness that she has driven her family away not only from her, but also from the Lord. As the story progresses, she sees the error of her ways. She commits herself again to the Lord and begins to live out her faith with a true Christlike love. The result is that her family is slowly drawn closer to her, and eventually to the Lord. This story also highlights the unfortunate results of choosing wrong priorities in the lives of children—focusing too much on the outward appearances rather than on the heart. The sadness and trials that Ruth Erskine, though a Christian, encountered through her own wrong choices and ill-advised decisions, can serve as great warnings to those who might be tempted to follow some of the same paths. Product Image Add To Cart   Julia Ried
Here we meet Julia Ried and Dr. Douglas of Ester Ried. Due to their mother's poor health, the family home has broken up, and Julia has become self-supporting against her mother's advice. Her new friend, the mistress of her boarding house, a "professing" Christian, easily overwhelms the impressionable young girl and gradually starts drawing her away from her more conservative upbringing. As Dr. Douglas tries to point out what is taking place, she becomes prideful and resentful, and plunges further in the opposite direction. She wastes valuable opportunities to help others and be a testimony for the Lord. At last, after a tragedy, she comes back to the Lord, recommits her life, and begins to attempt to undo some of the damage she has done. The great value of this book is in showing how foolish young people are when they do not listen to those who are older and wiser, and also makes one aware that not everyone who professes to be a Christian is a friend. Product Image Add To Cart   King's Daughter
This story deals with a subject we do not often hear about in our generation—temperance. Mrs. Alden skillfully answers every argument that people, especially professing Christians, use to defend their positions on this subject. As there is nothing new under the sun, the same types of arguments are used today to support every other kind of worldliness, and the answers are as pertinent to these issues as well. On a more personal level, this story will present a model of love and servanthood from a daughter to her father. Perhaps if we would work as diligently in our own fields of harvest, we would reap more fruit. Also, the great scriptural truth that, "His ways are not as our ways," is made plain in the circumstances of their lives and may encourage all who read this book to take hope that God is in control and working even when we may not see it. Mrs. Alden excels as a children's author, and Little Fishers and Their Nets is yet another example of her skill in introducing young people to Christ. It is the story of a Christian girl with many family problems and a neighbor boy who encourages her to trust in God. He works with her to help win her family to the Lord. The story is loaded with wonderful demonstrations of great character traits such as industriousness, diligence, faithfulness, thoughtfulness, creativity, and a great deal of love and care. It further prompts the thought that we might make such a difference in our families and neighbors for Christ with some forethought bathed in prayer. This story is heart-warming, enjoyable, and a blessing to read. KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Man of the House
This is another excellent book by Mrs. Alden. It is about a young man who at a very early age became the man of the house. He had the large responsibility of caring for his mother and younger sister as best he could. It was a responsibility which he took very seriously and bore to the best of his ability. This book teaches by example how God meets daily needs when we put our faith in Him. It also illustrates the value of the ability to be content when things seem difficult. As a backdrop to these lessons, the reader is allowed to see some of the inner workings of this young man's heart as he decides that the only right thing to do is to embrace the Saviour. There are other lessons as he struggles with the thought that he must "show his colors." This story will hold fast the interest of young men and young ladies while moving from one valuable lesson to the next as the story winds on. Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Ruth Erskine's Crosses
This excellent book features Ruth Erskine from Four Girls at Chautauqua. You will remember that Ruth is a proud girl of some wealth, and when an unplanned event occurs in her life, which turns her life upside down, she is left not knowing how to handle it, or what course of action to take. Through this trial, she begins to learn how shallow a Christian she actually is. She prays for wisdom and grace, yet she rises from her knees, feeling better that she has prayed, but no change has taken place in her heart. She is still the same Ruth after an hour on her knees. In the meantime, there is a new person in her life, Susan, whom Ruth looks down upon. She is a "real" Christian with love and power. The reader can easily see the difference. Ruth thoughtlessly marries a man who is not a Christian thinking it will all work out. It doesn't. Ruth is striving to be a Christian, and, yet, failing each day. She desires to be a loving wife and mother with a good testimony, but all too often, her words express only shallow self-righteousness. Instead of drawing others closer to Christ, she turns them away. If we, for a few moments, put our own thoughts under the microscope, we might be amazed just how self-righteous we are or how much pride we have in who we are, how we live, what our standards are, etc. It is no wonder others do not see more of Jesus in us! This book will challenge you. It did me. If I still had teenage girls at home, I might have them write an essay after each chapter on what they learned. This book will provide excellent thought for discussion. KOF Old Reprint.

The saga of Ruth Erskine's life continues. This book catches us up to Ruth's life from where the book, Judge Burnham's Daughters, ends. It is quite interesting to read about Ruth's closeness to her son, and the exemplary example she sets as a mother-in-law. She is "fifty-something" in this story. Life has ebbed and flowed; problems have arisen and settled; death has often come close to her, but through it all, she has continued to grow closer to her Lord, and her Christian walk has become much more Christlike. This is definitely a thought-provoking book! KOF Old Reprint.

This book has to be one of the best Mrs. Alden wrote! It is the story of two young girls—one a very wealthy girl, and the other, a very poor girl. One has grown up in Sunday school and church, and one has just begun to come to church. These girls sit side by side in Sunday school. This is a story of contrasts: rich and poor, educated and uneducated, and, more importantly, a professing girl, and one who has truly come to know the Savior. This gem of a story paints a black and white picture for children and adults of the difference between saying you are a Christian and actually being a Christian. Excellent! Every child should read this one! KOF Old Reprint.

It picks up all the tangled threads of the Randolph family lives, and, as these threads are woven together, the reader will see how God works all things together for good, and uses anything and everything, including seeming tragedies, to bring people to Himself. You will also see the kind of transformation in attitudes that only He can bring about in His children. This is a great little series. KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Three People
This is an outstanding book for young men! It is an exciting story that showcases the value of honesty, hard work and obedience. It is the story of three boys all born on the same day: one born into poverty, one born into middle class society, and one born into wealth. The lives of these three boys become intertwined as they grow and mature into young manhood. It portrays each young man's life as he faces the temptations of the world and his character is tested. The best thing about this book is that one young man is a follower of Christ with a fertile heart. He is prompt, courteous, respectful and honest, and, in due course, is rewarded accordingly. Young men will find this book inspiring as it gives them a glimpse of the men they can be. Parents, you will be well pleased with this example of manhood. Excellent for boys, but all ages will enjoy this title. As an adult, I couldn't put the book down! KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   Twenty Minutes Late
Twenty Minutes Late is the sequel to Miss Dee Dunmore Bryant. It is a story about the many strange twists that the Lord sends in the life of Mrs. Bryant's daughter, Caroline, when circumstances (God's provision) cause her to be twenty minutes late for a short train ride. The story quite handily demonstrates the concept of God working in our lives for our own good and that of others in many ways that are simply beyond our comprehension, yet deftly demonstrates the correct attitude and willingness of spirit that we should strive to have during such times, though our flesh may find them trying. This is a thought-provoking book for every wife to read, especially for those women who are married to unbelievers, or to those professing-to-believe men who really are not believers. You may think the wife in the story was right in the way she handled her marriage difficulties, or you may think she was wrong, but I do promise you that you will be inspired to take a look at your own role in your marriage. It is an extraordinary story. KOF Old Reprint.

Product Image Add To Cart   We Twelve Girls
We Twelve Girls is a collection of letters written by twelve young ladies. Their Bible teacher had given each of them a little booklet with a Bible verse for each week of the year, and had challenged them to live by those verses during the coming year. The girls each promised to do so, and decided to write each other during the year and share how God used those verses to teach them a spiritual truth. These excellent letters will inspire desire toward practical Bible living in the heart of the reader. This is a perfect book for any young lady, and the concepts apply to boys as well.

Product Image Add To Cart   Wise And Otherwise
In this volume we meet again the characters from Ester Reid, Julia Reid, and the King's Daughter. In each book Isabella Alden has a definite lesson to teach, and this one is such an important one—to completely rid one's self of self! When we are filled with self, we are so positive we are right, our way is so absolutely correct, that we cannot evaluate the valuable input of others. We cannot even know that God is trying to reach us and teach us because we already know. The pastor of the church in this story does immeasurable harm to his people and to himself when he is blinded by self and pride. After a tragedy he comes to realize, "It is all a blank! . . .I don't know where to turn . . . and yet, I am a Christian. I surely am a Christian. I cannot have been preaching the gospel for so many years and know nothing about it. Oh, God, have mercy on me! . . . I have no prop to lean on—nothing but blackness." This man was so full of pride and self, that even as a pastor, he never realized that he did not know God. This book shows how little pride it actually takes to distort our views and thinking. If we are not careful, it is possible we could find ourselves heading down the same path. KOF Old Reprint.
