Tips for Basket Weaving

Our group was fortunate to have a Mom and daughter that have 16 years of weaving experience.  Here are some of the suggestions that they passed on.  Use quality materials.  Superior quality reed is the best.  If you are doing the project in a group setting, don’t use kits.  Save the money you would have spent on the kits to buy the superior quality reeds.  Don’t get discouraged when you make a mistake.  It is an opportunity to learn.

Basket weaving takes practice and it is not a craft that can be easily picked up and mastered.  Make the same basket more than once and watch your progress.  (Tampa, FL)

Basket Weaving History

For the month of January 2011, we learned about basket weaving.  For the first of our two basket weaving meetings, we were blessed to have a professional basket weaver, Mrs. G, come and give a talk about her hobby.  She brought MANY beautiful baskets for us to look at!  We learned a lot about the history and uses for baskets as well as a lot of interesting facts (Did you know the most famous basket weavers are men?)  Mrs. G was gracious enough to come back for the second meeting to help us complete our basket-weaving kits!  We used a camp kit that we purchased online which gave us 20 baskets kits for only $40 including shipping and handling!  The kit was very easy to use and though our meeting ran a bit over the usual hour and a half, almost everyone was able to complete their project in one sitting.  No two baskets looked alike, but they were all perfect!  I would highly recommend this type of kit.
