Bicycling Sharing

Bike Riding and Camping

We combined the biking badge with our camping trip! We asked everyone to bring their bikes to the camping trip. On the second day after breakfast we enjoyed a "seminar" on bike riding presented to our club by one of the dad's who is an avid bike rider. He discussed the requirements our handbook suggests and had some of the boys check the tire pressure of all the bikes. We all strapped on our bike helmets and enjoyed a 5 mile bike ride through the countryside. It was such a memorable weekend!  (Honey Brook, PA)

A Bike Rodeo

Our club leaders created a bike safety checklist and taught each boy how to check his own bicylce for safe operation and helmet for proper fit. We taught them how put air in the tires and my husband even had them assemble an old bicycle that he had as a child. We took them to the park and set up a bike rodeo that helped them develop and then demonstrate specific skills, such as braking and turning. We used garden hoses for boundaries and little orange cones for obstacles. We also rode the trail 1 mile several different times. We taught them the standard hand signals and courteous riding. The boys had a blast and have asked to do it again!  (Sapulpa, OK)

Local Bike Shop Gives Class, and Police Station Does Too!

The first thing we did was take a field trip to a local bike shop after hours. The owner of the shop showed us many things such as the different types of bikes, all the parts of a bike and what they’re used for, equipment used for riding, proper riding attire, how to repair the tire/tube, etc. Then, he answered any questions that the children had.

The following week, we went to the Police Station and an officer handed out free helmets to the kids and went over all the biking laws and proper signals. They also handed out stickers and bike safety coloring books for the kids.  During the next two weeks, we met and went on a long bike ride together on 2 different types of trails: off road and on road.  The boys had a great time.  (Palm Beach Gardens, FL)
