Butterflies Sharing

Butterfly Classes, Projects, and Art Too!

Our Keepers of the Faith groups combined boys and girls of all ages to learn about butterflies. We rotated the children in groups from classroom to classrom.

First Classroom - We had one classroom for learning about the butterflies. The teacher had prepared pages for the kids to work on to identify butterflies, and to answer the questions about them. They also saw a short video borrowed from the library.

Second Classroom - The next classroom had a craft project that was stunningly beautiful when finished.

Craft Project - We used a 5x7 matting board of darker colors such as green, black, or burgundy for the picture frame. The picture was made on a smaller piece of coordinating cardstock paper also in darker colors. To make the picture, we had a large and fairly simple rubber stamp of a butterfly. The stamp was pressed onto a wet sponge that was filled with a water and chlorine mixture. We had placed the dry sponge in a disposable pie pan and then poured the bleach (only lightly watered down) over the sponge. The children pressed the wet rubber stamp onto the cardstock, careful to center it. Lift it back up carefully, and you will have a beautiful imprint of a butterfly that frames nicely on the matting board.  The parents loved this as much as the kids.

Third Classroom - This was a place to make butterfly stationary. The children used smaller and more intricate butterfly rubber stamps and various colors of stamping ink on the ink pads. Choosing a color of cardstock, then a different color of ink, the children pressed the design onto the cardstock. They used colored pencils to fill in the beautiful pictures. Then they made coordinating colored paper envelopes to complete the stationary. We just found the correct size needed, and took apart an envelope to use as a pattern. They just traced, cut it out, and folded the sides in using a small amount of glue to hold in place. The boys were not as keen about making the stationary, but when we suggested they use it as a gift for someone, they did the project with a different attitude. All of this was great fun. Several of the children were able to visit a butterfly conservatory and they also shared pictures and information they had learned on that visit.  (Groton, CT)

Butterfly Field Trip

We just completed the butterfly badge with a field trip to the Cleveland Zoo. They had a great live butterfly exhibit that we were able to walk through and see butterflies up close and flying around us.  Although these were not common butterflies to our area, it was great. I would encourage other clubs to check with their local zoo to see when the exhibit will be coming to their area.  (Tallmadge, OH)
