Candlewicking Sharing

Family Candlewicking

Candlewicking is very easy, even for very young people who can safely handle a needle. It is great to do while listening to recorded books (one of our favorite pasttimes) or taken in the car on trips. It is very mobile and inexpensive, requiring few materials. I started our projects by cutting 10" squares of muslin and layering two squares with quilt batting in between. I held them in place with wooden embroidery hoops. Then my girls and I drew our own patterns on the fabric with pencils- each one different and containing variations of circles, hearts, and flower shapes. We then made our candlewick knots neatly on the patterns.

Once finished we made both pillows and hot pad/potholders with the squares by stitching 10" square pieces of fabric (right sides together then turning inside out and stuffing full) for pillows, and 10" square pieces of fabric along with piping (same as for pillow with the piping edge placed between the layers at the stitched edge and piping toward the inside) for the hot pads. They were wonderful Christmas gifts to friends and family and my girls were so proud of their handiwork. Now one of my sons wants to give it a try!  (Argyle, NY)
