Survival in the wintertime in the lofty areas of the Rocky Mountains is always stressful, but especially so when a blizzard sweeps down from the heights, covering the food sources and locking nearly all the creatures in bitter cold and deep smothering whiteness.
Sensing the weather change, some animals seek shelter prior to the storm, while others are caught in it. All are hungry—some desperately so. The deep snow gives some animals an advantage, while to others it brings a frightening vulnerability to their enemies.
A true-to-life portrayal of the interaction of some of God's wild creatures in the western Rockies—the bighorn sheep, the marten, the cony, the mule deer, the weasel, and the mountain lion, to name a few. The story covers only three days, but to the wild creatures—to those held captive by the storm, as well as to those who must venture out into it to try to satisfy their gnawing hunger—the time seems very long indeed. There is plenty of fear, suspense, and trauma among the wild folk—for the hunted as well as for the hunter—which will hold the interest of both young and old readers. Truly God's plan for a care of each of His creatures is marvelous.

This book is a fascinating nature study. Boys and girls will enjoy this book. It makes a great read aloud in winter. This is a great study on point of view. Each chapter is a different animal. An example is you'll read about the snowshoe rabbit escaping capture and then you'll the read the perspective of the animals trying to catch the rabbit. I felt bad for the little rabbit trying to escape from so many animals, but I also realized that they needed to eat too. There are so many things that a homeschooler could do with this book. Research could be done on each animal. Studies on food chains and webs. Comparing which animals live alone or in groups. Compare which animals store food for winter and which ones hunt during the winter. At the end of the book you do find out what happens to each animal at the end of the storm.

Thanks so much! My children are loving our Keepers nights. We have only been doing it a few months, but we are all enjoying it. It gives me a wonderful (scheduled) time with my girls and my husband time with our sons which we had never really made happen. It's a blessing in more than one way.
