This is a delightful story about a poor little girl whose only possession was a plump white chicken. The mother wisely uses the chicken to illustrate many lessons to her child, but the most important lesson Bernie learned herself. There was to be a special offering at church for some orphans, and Bernie had nothing to give except her chicken. Could she do it? You will be blessed by her struggle to give her all to the Lord. I finished “Bernie’s White Chicken.” My favorite chapters are the first one and the last one because Bernie had a wonderful chicken that she loved and I do too. It’s really hard to decide to give her away for me! Mine is white too and named Flopsy. When I feel selfish to want to keep things for myself, I know I should just give it away. Reading Bernie was a good lesson of this for me.

How This Book Changed My Life This story was about a little girl who had a little white chicken. The chicken was her only possession. She loved the chicken more than anything excepting her family. The chicken showed her many things. A missionary came and he talked about all the little orphan boys and girls who were very poor and had really nothing. They gathered together to give things to the orphans, things they might need. Bernie’s mother was giving a dress she had outgrown. Bernie had nothing to give. She thought and thought and came up with an idea. She would give her tame little white chicken. At first she was very uncertain but in the end she gave it to Mr. Richards a man that worked at the factory. He said he would pay her later. Bernie made him promise not to give the chicken to anyone who might eat her. Bernie and her mother went to the place where they had to go to give stuff to the little orphan children. There was lots of people giving stuff to the poor orphan children. But Mr. Richards the richest man in their small town gave only three dollars! Everyone was amazed. There was lots of little children there giving stuff like mittens, clothes and a dollar or two. Mr Richards came in with Bernie’s little white chicken. “Who would like to buy this chicken. I will sell it for a low price, 5 dollars.’’ A man spoke up. “I will!’’ Then another. “I will buy it for 10.’’ The price went higher and higher. Though Bernie didn’t know soon little white chicken had been sold for 145 dollars. Mr. Richards in the end bought the chicken because the last buyer was a group of men and he didn't want to break his promise and let someone eat her. Mr. Richards walked up to her and gave her the money. She was astonished. “This is all mine to give to the orphans.’’ She did not know the right amount. She walked up and gave the money to the missionary. When she walked down the people were cheering. She did not know why they were cheering. “Why should they cheer for me. Everyone else gave something too.’’ Though she didn’t know she had gave more than anyone. A total of 145 dollars. She walked home very sad because she no longer had her white chicken. The next day she found a box on the porch. There was a tag that said: To: Bernie on it. She wondered what it could be. She opened it and out came her white chicken. Mr. Richards had given her bac k. She asked her mother. “Did I really do anything?’’ “Yes I really think you did,’’ her mother replied. We should be able to give like Bernie. She gave everything she had to people she didn’t know. I would like to follow Bernie’s example and give my all.
