This true story starts out slow but ends up wonderfully. It was originally published as a serial in Youth's Companion in 1949 and has recently been brought back into print. It is about people living in less than desirable circumstances struggling to make ends meet. It is the story of a lonely boy who feels that he is unloved, and he is not able to come to a true saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. He, Millard, grows up and enters the military during World War II against his parents' wishes. His parents, Mennonites, hold the belief of non-resistance to the evil forces in the world. Millard, during the heat of the battle, with fellow soldiers dying at his side, calls upon God to save his soul. It is a moving struggle for the truth and light in a dark and evil world. It is a very good book and will provoke one's thinking.
