This book has to be one of the best Mrs. Alden wrote! It is the story of two young girls—one a very wealthy girl, and the other, a very poor girl. One has grown up in Sunday school and church, and one has just begun to come to church. These girls sit side by side in Sunday school. This is a story of contrasts: rich and poor, educated and uneducated, and, more importantly, a professing girl, and one who has truly come to know the Savior. This gem of a story paints a black and white picture for children and adults of the difference between saying you are a Christian and actually being a Christian. Excellent! Every child should read this one! KOF Old Reprint.

One of the things I liked about this book is that the girls in the story tried to do nice things for each other, like when Ethol Harison made a dress for Sara Lambert. When in the story Sara Lambert would always have a verse on a card to memorize. My mom always has us write verses on a card to carry in our pocket to memorize through the day. The story encourages me to do more Bible memorization as well, which will help me to hide God’s word in my heart to help me in struggles and also know verses to use to help others to get saved.

Reader beware, “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are”(1 Corinthians 1:27-28 English Standard Version). What a clarion call for me, a believer churched from before birth and fluent in Sunday School terminology since primary school. I thank God for revealing to me my Pharisaical comfort in contrast to my proverbial neighbor’s poverty, transparency, and earnest search for truth.
