Once again we meet Ruth Erskine (Four Girls at Chautauqua) now Ruth Burnham. She has become "unequally yoked," and this volume details many trials and heartaches that arise from this situation. Also, though she has managed to hold to her faith, she has done it with such hardness that she has driven her family away not only from her, but also from the Lord. As the story progresses, she sees the error of her ways. She commits herself again to the Lord and begins to live out her faith with a true Christlike love. The result is that her family is slowly drawn closer to her, and eventually to the Lord. This story also highlights the unfortunate results of choosing wrong priorities in the lives of children—focusing too much on the outward appearances rather than on the heart. The sadness and trials that Ruth Erskine, though a Christian, encountered through her own wrong choices and ill-advised decisions, can serve as great warnings to those who might be tempted to follow some of the same paths. Review by: Patience in Murray, IA
This book picks up six years after Ruth Erskine’s Crosses, and once again, Ruth Erskine Burnham is the main character. This one had me in a tearful state towards the end, and is one of the best books in this series, in my opinion. Ruth is married, and in this story I saw the pain that resulted from her marrying an unbeliever. Ruth’s two step-daughters, Seraph and Minta, seem prejudiced against her for reasons unknown to Ruth Burnham. However, she and her son, Erskine, often hang out together, as they seem to be the odd ones of the bunch so-to-speak. Ruth is not very intimate with the two daughters, so has no say when marriage comes into view, yet she knows that the men are not trustworthy. In the end, Ruth finally comes to understand and love them before it’s too late. It helped me to realize how quickly death can come, and the heartache that results from an unsaved partner. Extremely tearful and happy (and convicting), Judge Burnham’s Daughters will hold your attention to the very last word! I loved this one, and recommend it to others with a rating of five stars.

Last night my 12 year old came in with tears because she was moved by the spiritual lesson in one of Alden's books and we stayed up to midnight talking about it. (that is why I bought 12 KOF books for her last week for her birthday next week) Thank you.
