This story deals with a subject we do not often hear about in our generation?temperance. Mrs. Alden skillfully answers every argument that people, especially professing Christians, use to defend their positions on this subject. As there is nothing new under the sun, the same types of arguments are used today to support every other kind of worldliness, and the answers are as pertinent to these issues as well. On a more personal level, this story will present a model of love and servanthood from a daughter to her father. Perhaps if we would work as diligently in our own fields of harvest, we would reap more fruit. Also, the great scriptural truth that, "His ways are not as our ways," is made plain in the circumstances of their lives and may encourage all who read this book to take hope that God is in control and working even when we may not see it.
