This is another excellent book by Mrs. Alden. It is about a young man who at a very early age became the man of the house. He had the large responsibility of caring for his mother and younger sister as best he could. It was a responsibility which he took very seriously and bore to the best of his ability.
This book teaches by example how God meets daily needs when we put our faith in Him. It also illustrates the value of the ability to be content when things seem difficult. As a backdrop to these lessons, the reader is allowed to see some of the inner workings of this young man's heart as he decides that the only right thing to do is to embrace the Saviour. There are other lessons as he struggles with the thought that he must "show his colors." This story will hold fast the interest of young men and young ladies while moving from one valuable lesson to the next as the story winds on. Old Reprint.

Reuben’s honesty and discernment encouraged me, how he could lead his family out of the city to live in the country. I hope to have the same character as him. Assuredly, all who read this book will want to follow Reubens’ example.

A very agreeable, if impossibly perfect, character, Reuben quickly endeared himself to me as one of my own sons. As he encounters various unusual circumstances, some happy and some not, he displays an equanimity and contentedness that spurred me on to a greater faith in our sovereign God. I found myself re-reading passages to glean wisdom from Reuben’s responses to bullies, untoward turns of events, and false accusations. He carries on his daily work of providing for his mother and sister undeterred. So shall I carry on my daily work of loving my husband and children. Undeterred. “The Man of the House” reminded me too that I have much to learn from my little ones. Regardless of the season of my life, I, like Reuben, must steward my time and talents as unto the Lord, even in the seemingly smallest way.

Last night my 12 year old came in with tears because she was moved by the spiritual lesson in one of Alden's books and we stayed up to midnight talking about it. (that is why I bought 12 KOF books for her last week for her birthday next week) Thank you.
