Meet Giant Sloth, Giant Selfishness, Giant Untruth, Giant Hate, and Giant Pride. They are as wily and sneaky as they are huge and strong—these giants within. Meet Fides, an honorable knight, whose job it is to slay these giants and others. He wishes to do so to please his King, with Whom he wishes to go soon to live. Fides is often easily tricked by these giants, as he often underestimates them and their power. He comes uncomfortably close to being destroyed by several. Only with the sword and shield given him by his King, and with the aid of his friend Conscience, does he narrowly gain the victory.
The Giant-Killer is considered one of A.L.O.E.'s finest works, and she intended it to be a teaching device designed to be read in a family setting in which parents can explain and supplement discussion of its truths. It is allegorical in nature, and is a story within a story in which a mother uses to teach young people about the subtle, yet odious, sins of the heart.

Giants still roam the earth today! Their power and craftiness trick every Christian into their pits and webs. I hope I have the strength to withstand all sin giants. “The Giant-Killer” made me remember that God always has mercy, even in times of distress and discouragement.

Against my better judgment, I purchased “The Giant-Killer,” trusting that it was not the worldly fable that the title purported it to be. What a blessing it was during our family’s read aloud time! A practical and creative mother amuses her children and two guests with an allegory about brave Fides and the giants that plague him. This rolicking tale, through its personification of our inner struggles, provided my children a framework for examining their own sins and equipped them with language to discuss them. Suddenly the children’s eyes were opened to their bona fide enemy—not their father, not their mother—and I could come alongside to exhort them in their spiritual battles. The little ones began to understand that their battles, while unseen, are real and have eternal value. For months afterwards, our family fondly recalled our hero’s escapades and compared them to our own. Fellow soldiers, “The Giant-Killer” is a must in your arsenal! (As an aside, and without giving away the ending, at the conclusion of the book the children and I also had an unusual and profitable discussion about whom the Lord chooses and why.)

Adolphus and Constantine Probyn move to a small cottage in the country so they can have a private teacher. But the two new boys don’t have a nice attitude. Con and Pro (as they were nick-named) make life hard for the teacher’s three children, Aleck, Bertha, and Laura, so Mrs. Roby starts reading a book, The Giant-Killer.
Fides, a great knight in the king’s court, is sent to slay the giants in the land. On his journey he kills pride, untruth, hate, selfishness, and sloth. Ever so slowly, with the help of God, Pro and Con changed.
We also can change with the help of God. If we have problems with these giants, all we need to do is pray and God will send His Holy Spirit to aid us in our battle against these giants in our lives.

Thanks so much! My children are loving our Keepers nights. We have only been doing it a few months, but we are all enjoying it. It gives me a wonderful (scheduled) time with my girls and my husband time with our sons which we had never really made happen. It's a blessing in more than one way.
