This is the first story in a series about four girls who attend one of the first Chautauqau Bible meetings. (It was actually like a Bible camp which lasted for a week or so.) Three of these young girls professed to be Christians and were regular attendees at church, but, although they professed Christ, there was little or no proof in their daily lives. The fourth girl never even professed to be a Christian. These girls went for a lark to Chautuaqua, and when they came under the earnest preaching of the Word of God, and were in daily contact with sincere believers, they became aware of their cold, lifeless hearts. Four Girls at Chautauqua reveals how God works in the souls of different people, drawing each to Himself. As with all Mrs. Alden's books, the difference between those who simply attend church and those who love Jesus Christ is plainly illustrated. This book will help the reader to discern in just which group he or she might be. KOF Old Reprint.

Like most common homeschoolers, I grew up on the “classics”, becoming a devoted fan of the Anne of Green Gables series. I was always dubious of Keepers of the Faith, and I secretly hated them (much to my regret) for their stand on books and authors. However, when I first picked up this book, I was not a Christian. But as I read, God opened my eyes to see the difference between previous books I had read, and this wholesome book. I could readily see that this was a story unlike any other I had read. And the desire rose in my heart to have what Flossy (such a sweet woman) eventually got at Chautauqua – salvation in Jesus Christ, and finally what all four of the girls had – faith in God. God used this book to bring me to Himself, so this book changed my life in a dramatic way. This book is the inspiring story of four women who “went on a lark” to Chautauqua, little expecting that God would use those meetings there to change the courses of their lives for His glory. I highly recommend this stirring story!

Grab your satchel and train ticket, because you’re transported to 1875, heading to Chautauqua, New York. Your companions are Misses Ruth Erskine, Marion Wilbur, Flossy Shipley, and Eurie Mitchell, all of whom are unbelievers, and completely different from each other. Watch in gladness as the sermons and meetings at Chautauqua have tremendous effect on their lives, transforming them for all eternity. My favorite book, Four Girls at Chautauqua played an important role in my salvation. God used His word and that book to draw me to Him. I highly recommend this book, which is one in a series of eight entitled “The Chautauqua Series”. Extremely well-written and descriptive, it will draw the reader closer to Christ. Thank you, Keepers of the Faith, for publishing such wonderful wholesome books!

This book has really had an impact on me because it has many good examples throughout the book of the way Christians should be thinking. It also has many good examples of the "think they are Christian" people. I think every teen should definitely read this book because it gives many different perspectives and can help them evaluate where they really stand for Christ. I know as a mom it helped me to do just that. But I definitely want my kids to read it before they go out into the world.
