Julia Reid is the continuing story in the Ester Reid Series (book two), and this particular book focuses on Ester’s younger sister, 16 year-old Julia Reid. Because of Mrs. Ried’s frail health, she and two of the children go to the home of an old friend, Dr. Van Anden. Julia herself moves ten miles away from her old home, where she becomes a book keeper at a shop. Her hostess, Mrs. Tyndall, professes Christ, and runs the boarding house where Julia and Dr. Douglass reside. But the witty matron draws the young Julia farther away from God, despite Julia’s many warnings. Will she come to the realization of her ways before it is too late? A very interesting, thought-provoking book that showed me how different profession is from possession, and how young people need guidance from mature Christians. I highly recommend this book and the rest in the series. Thank you, Keepers, for wonderful, godly books!

This is such a good book! Written from Julia's point of view Julia shares her story of getting caught up in Mrs. Tyndall's gossip and snobbery. Every 16 year old Christian girl would benefit from reading this book. A young girl needs to learn that not every older Christian woman is spiritually mature. They also need to learn how to spot flattery. The Bible says, "A man that flatteresth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet." and Mrs. Tyndall certainlly spreads a net for Julia's feet. The highlight of this book is Abbie from Ester Ried. She is a great character study and you should follow her into Wise and Otherwise. There is also a lesson in this book about how hard it can be to come out of a backslidden condition.

Julia Reid has taught me the importance of being grounded in what we believe. We should know our convictions and what the Bible says so that we will be capable of warding off the enemy’s subtle attacks. If we are not careful to “know the truth,” we can be easily taken in by someone’s negative and gossipy words just like Julia. They could lead us into all kinds of activities and things that we will someday painfully regret. Also, Julia Reid has reminded me how we should be careful not to take for granted that everyone who professes Christ is His true disciple. If Julia had only been on her guard and taken the time to be grounded in God’s Word, she would have easily realized the falseness of Mrs. Tyndall’s deceiving words and would have quickly known that she was either not one of Christ’s disciples, or at least was not walking intimately with Him. She should have taken her words and compared them with the Bible to see the drastic difference, and chosen to follow the Bible instead. I have definitely learned that words are a powerful tool that we should use wisely.
