This story deals with a subject we do not often hear about in our generation—temperance. Mrs. Alden skillfully answers every argument that people, especially professing Christians, use to defend their positions on this subject. As there is nothing new under the sun, the same types of arguments are used today to support every other kind of worldliness, and the answers are as pertinent to these issues as well.
On a more personal level, this story will present a model of love and servanthood from a daughter to her father. Perhaps if we would work as diligently in our own fields of harvest, we would reap more fruit. Also, the great scriptural truth that, "His ways are not as our ways," is made plain in the circumstances of their lives and may encourage all who read this book to take hope that God is in control and working even when we may not see it. KOF Old Reprint.

The King’s Daughter addresses an important issue most people want to avoid, drinking. Dell’s character promotes temperance and back then it was the best solution. In the West drinking was entertainment, which let to the habit of drinking because there was nothing else to do. In the novel Dell starts to think she is alone, but realized that she is the Daughter of the King. That was powerful to me. I sometimes feel like I’m the only one with Christian views, but I read the Bible and find that God loves me, no matter what. Another wonderful aspect was the devotion of daughter to father. She cleaned, cooked, and worked on getting him sober. Even through his constant ridicule and scoffing. It’s true that every book is not a life changing experience, but when a book makes you read the Bible and find what the characters are trying to say, that is a book of gold. This is an amazing book, showing what alcohol can do to someone, and find for themselves what path God is telling them to take.

Dell Bronson is the dear character of this moving story in the Ester Reid Series -- third book to be exact. You won’t understand how this book intertwines with the rest of the series, but you will be enlightened in the fifth book, Wise and Otherwise. Dell is a strong Christian temperance woman, even though her father keeps a bar where poor Dell lives. Her mother, a mature Christian lady, died, leaving Dell quite alone. Encouraged by her saved uncle and aunt, she bravely moves ahead in her walk with God. Praying earnestly for the salvation of her drunkard father, she joins the temperance committee, learning to her great regret that their pastor (Mr. Tresvant) is not against wine, and the temperance leader, Mr. Nelson, is not a Christian. Will things ever turn around for her? When offered marriage, will she marry a man whose views go directly opposite her own, even though her emotions are involved? A heart-challenging story that greatly moved me to a deeper faith in God, and a realization of the wickedness of wine. I know I was challenged, and couldn’t put this one down!

A wonderful book! I was able to relate to the character of Dell. She works, but she gets her focus off of Christ and gets discouraged. She inspired me by turning to her Bible, prayer, and Godly counsel when things get rough. Things don't happen for Dell right away. She has to wait a while to see fruit from her work. She gave up A LOT to serve her dad. She is a very inspirational character. One of my favorite Alden books.

Dell Bronson has a tough duty ahead of her. She has been called to be the instrument to save her Dad from drinking, and what a place she finds herself in! A slummy rum-saturated town, quite different from Boston, where she lived with her godly Aunt and Uncle. She often gets into the slough of despond, until she remembers she is a daughter of The King, who is planning everything she goes through. Quite a thought-provoking book, we truly do not think or do much about temperance issues.
