Nothing seems to work out for this family. They are always in debt and can't seem to live within their means. The children seem to need more than the parents can give. Irritation and tension and quarrels seem to reign in the family circle. To add to this, a spinster, hyper-critical aunt has come to live with them. This family does love each other, though they do not seem to know how to show it. They attend church faithfully, but do they really know Christ? To make matters worse, they seem to have no discernment regarding suitable matches for their daughters. Will these lives be ruined too? Oh, what trials they go through! Can anything be done to help this family? Or must they continue on with their downward spiral? An earnest Christian attempts to get them to see "what they could." Is it too late? Or can lives be salvaged? You will want to see for yourself.

Review by: Patience in Murray, IA
When Rachel Cameron comes home from her long stay with relatives in California, she realizes what a mess her family is in – she has quarreling sisters, a tired worried father who is in debt, a mother who is stressed to the limits, and her sister engaged to be married. Rachel is the only Christian in this family, some of them professing, but not possessing. Actually, Rachel is hardly mentioned till half of the book is done, but after she gets home, things start getting brighter. Mainly, this is Mary Cameron’s story, though, but there were several things that blessed me by this book.

First, the Cameron’s neighbor is a true example of godly manhood, showing concern for the spiritual welfare of others, and is a gentleman of Christian character. Another thing that I love is how Mrs. Alden repeatedly shows readers the difference between a professing Christian and a possessing one. In this book, Rachel is the real Christian, and Mary Cameron is the professor, and one can readily see the difference. We can also see how God works all things together for good, even though we can’t see it at the time. I loved this book, and recommend it!
