Know too that the Strayer-Upton Practical Arithmetic set has been well-received in our home, after a few days of transition from our teacher-intensive books. The older children, eight and nine, work on their own, checking and correcting their own work. If they approach Mother with a math-related question, our agreement is that they will be sent back to persevere at their seats. My primary impetus for implementing Practical Arithmetic was the desire for more profitable training time with the younger children -- and this has indeed come about -- not realizing the secondary benefits of the decision. First, the older children's recall of their math facts has quickened manifold and I expect that the high standards of the books will render my students useful in whatever future station the Lord provides. Second, my sons' interest in the subject has been piqued and they have plowed through the material, which is written in a sensible, amiable tone that appeals to our entrepreneurial young men, much more quickly than if I were serving as teacher. Third, the value of earnest work has not been lost on my children, for whom hot tears were not uncommon during the early days of Practical Arithmetic, and they have developed a admirable sense of responsibility and resourcefulness about their education.
